Global startup funding hit $297 billion in Q1 2026, according to a TechCrunch analysis of Crunchbase data published April 1. Anthropic’s $30 billion is heavy on data-center capacity. xAI’s $20 billion expands its training stack. Waymo’s $16 billion buys fleet expansion and safety validation for driverless operations in new metros. The consistent pattern across the big four is that the capital funds systems designed to take over progressively larger chunks of knowledge work and logistics.

Then there’s the rest. The Crunchbase breakdown shows that outside the mega-rounds, seed- and early-stage AI funding is running at record pace. TechCrunch reported on April 7 that VC firm Eclipse closed a fresh $1.3 billion aimed at “physical AI” companies — robotics, embodied agents, automation hardware. Runway Ventures launched a $10 million fund for early-stage AI builders. OpenAI alumni quietly started closing what looks like a $100 million fund of their own.
